Founded in 2012, Wallao.com has grown rapidly under the leadership of Arnold Sufjan. The family-focused businesses finds its niche in kids formal wear, specifically girls dresses and boys suits. The business is flourishing currently, yet has faced some challenges.
Initially, Arnold sought to create a store utilizing the internet space rather than traditional brick and mortar. Inspired by his family members who used physical locations for their businesses, while at the same being influenced by his experience in tech, the idea seemed very logical even though online retailing was not quite as popular in 2012 as it is today. Nonetheless, the business found its start on a Magento eCommerce platform and the move forward commenced.
The site now boasts thousands of visitors per month which is both beneficial and daunting. While sales are good, risk can be very real. One fateful day, Arnold began receiving email messages from his customers. Traffic had plummeted and the contents of each email read like a nightmare.
As for the downtime itself, we still got traffic, but much less. Many customers sent emails saying: ‘I think your site has been hacked’. The blog and our resource center went down and were replaced by a strange message. We were surprised at that. They were completely down.
With security as a first priority, Arnold began to investigate the options to protect his customers as well as his business. After a referral from his website host, he contacted Sucuri Security for remediation (hack resolution) services. Following the any cybersecurity breach, many of the same thoughts and emotions occur that typically follow traditional crimes. Shock, confusion, frustration are only a few of the many. Yet, Arnold maintained composure and resolute focus to ensure his customers were safe and secure in the best way possible. In addition to a recommendation from his host, Arnold's intent had always been to employ the skills of professionals. Specifically, security professionals.
I thought that hacking was absurd. At first, I thought it was pretty rare and did not think my site would be hacked. After we found out we got hacked, we wanted to use a 3rd party company. We definitely wanted to do something about it, but we didn’t want to try to solve it by ourselves. We wanted to be sure it was professionally done.
The solution Arnold set in place seemed to be the correct one. Remediation efforts were successful. He recalls:
We contacted the support team and we got a really fast response. Within 24 hours, Sucuri had run diagnostics and removed vulnerabilities.
However, there still remained an issue. What happens in the event of another attack? What if the main site is hit next or the inventory database is compromised? An ongoing solution would need to be put in place to both prevent further attacks and also to provide quick recovery in the face of any potential issue. Sucuri offered the comprehensive solution needed.
[Security] is the top priority. The cost itself means nothing compared to their safety. From my point of view, it’s better to pay the third party to protect your customers and allow them to have a safe environment and a very safe website.
Wallao.com averages annual revenue sales in the millions. The potential negative impact in the area of customer loyalty alone could drastically impact business if proper security measures are omitted. Arnold’s first hand experience has taught him the real risk of online business. Yet, he found an ally in Sucuri’s security team.
If your site gets hacked and your customer knows about it, that is very bad. Thankfully, we found Sucuri was able to protect the site from that point forward.
