As a respected social media strategist, Mack Collier uses his website to create valuable content for potential clients and help drive his consulting business. He wants to spend time creating content that his visitors love to read. A lot of hard work goes into maintaining his regular readership, producing his podcast, and attracting new leads. With 40K visits monthly, the few days he spent on Google’s blacklist may have lost him thousands of visitors.
After searching for solutions, Mack found Sucuri. Our remediation experts were able to help him get off the blacklist permanently and locate the source of the issue. Relieved, and armed with new knowledge, Mack shared his experience with his readers in a blog post. We reached out to Mack, and he offered us some insight into how he dealt with the blacklist, and why he continues to recommend us to his readership.
No one expects to be blacklisted, much less infected with malware that could harm visitors and abuse your resources. Mack spared no time in looking for the right solution.
When I was hacked, visitors were coming to my site and either being immediately redirected to a ‘spam’ site, or their browser or anti-virus program was flashing up a huge warning that this site cannot be trusted! Obviously, that’s not a very good thing, so I knew I needed to get help from professionals to fix the problems on my site.
Before Mack invested in a professional service, he took a look around at what was out there.
WordPress and many other CMS platforms offer a wide range of plugins and extensions to configure security auditing and access control. Being an astute webmaster, he did his best to solve the problem with open-source software.
First, I tried to download some security plugins to give me an idea of what had happened… But the problem was, at best these plugins were alerting me to the fact that there were issues, but couldn’t fix them all. So I ended up paying to get Sucuri’s service for my blog… They were able to go in and clean up my blog, and then give me tips and ideas on how to keep a re-infection from happening.
Even the Sucuri WordPress Security Plugin offers a wide range of monitoring, hardening, scanning, and alerting features, but it can’t replace the skilled eyes and sophisticated technology behind the cleanup and monitoring plans that Sucuri offers.
When plugins failed to help him remove the malware himself and get his website delisted, he turned to his 50K followers for advice:
I did some research on my own, but what really cinched using Sucuri for me was I asked my Twitter network who I should contact about removing malware. Everyone was in agreement that Sucuri was the way to go, which sold me.
This scenario is not unusual. In fact, it is often the case with new clients. The majority of people who come to Sucuri are referred from forums and comment threads where experienced users have come to know and trust Sucuri. Consistently exceptional service, rapid response times, and unrivaled passion have resulted in word-of-mouth recommendations. These referrals are what has made Sucuri the fastest growing company in website security.
After taking care of Mack’s website and contacting Google to ensure that the blacklist was completely removed, our security analysts gave Mack additional steps and information about what happened.
What I loved about Sucuri is that they were very patient with working with me, since the attacks were coming over the weekend, they were very good about responding and addressing the issues usually within an hour or so, even on Saturdays and Sundays. They did a good job of explaining to me what happened and how I can avoid it in the future. For example, previously I would only update my plugins when I saw I had notices that a dozen or more were ready to be updated. Sucuri taught me that plugins are often updated to address potential security holes! So now I update all plugins as soon as they are available and haven’t had an issue in about 18 months. Now with Sucuri I feel completely protected.
